The Faces of Manila |
Population“Manila has a city population of more than 1.6 million inhabitants, more than 12 million people live in the metropolitan area (the National Capital Region)” (Nations Online). Even though Manila is the capital city of the Philippines, it is the second largest. Quezon City has a population of 2 million people, and Manila only has a population of 1.6 million. The quality of life in Manila is becoming lower due to the constant rural-urban migration which results in population growth. The government has put many policies and resettlement projects in place in order to address the population density problem.
MigrationEven though the majority of migration acts in the Philippines are acts of emigration, Manila also has appeal for migration. The people who migrate to the Philippines are traditionally of Chinese or Indian origin. Currently, there are 36,150 illegal immigrants working and living in the Philippines. In addition to the emigration, many people migrate out of the Philippines for labor. The number of women who migrate for labor is equivalent to the number of men who migrate for labor. In 1992, the number of women who were legally deployed each year was higher than the number of deployed men.
